KPC 24-25 Season is Underway.

Three weeks into the new season and we are delighted to have welcomed a number of new members and visitors to the club. We hope you have enjoyed the club the talks and images and it has encouraged you to develop your photography and take part in future activities at the club.

The season so far has included a ‘Share and Tell Members Evening’ in which projects, learning and images from the summer where shared by members. There was an eclectic mix of images including Wildlife Photography, images using vintage lenses, images produced using in camera features such as double exposure, Street Photography including some ICM (Intentional Camera Movement), and a photographic journey which included landscape images.

The last two Wednesday meetings have included a shared Zoom talk with Keswick Photographic Society by Jeanette Lendon entitled “Mobile Phone Photography” . Find Jeanette’s website at Jet Black Squares smartphone photography & videography Jeanette kindly provided notes from her talk, which are in the members section of the website.

Last week, award winning Wildlife Photographer Irene Amiet attended the club to give an in person talk “Photographic Wildlife Stories” . The talk was also available on Zoom for members to enjoy at home if they wished. https://www.ireneamiet.com/the-artist

Wednesday 2nd of October will see our first print competition of the year which will be judged by Carol and Gordon Watson of Lytham St Ann’s Photographic Society. Members are reminded to bring prints on the evening.

This is also a reminder that 2nd October is also the closing date for PDI images for the Open Competition on 16th October.

Members’ Achievements: National Press

The pinnacle for most photographers is to see their work in print but few receive national recognition for their images, which is why I’m thrilled to share club member Russell Millner’s recent press exposure.

Russell takes extended trips abroad to capture images of species not seen in the UK and in September his stunning image of a Gull facing off with an Arctic Fox taken in Norway appeared in the Telegraph newspaper.

More recently, Russell’s beautifully captured image of Polar Bears taken in Canada appeared in The Times. He says “The adult Polar Bears were play fighting as they do when they wait for the ice to freeze.  This is a time of year when Polar Bears tolerate each other’s company, possibly to avoid conflict later on in the season when life becomes more serious (ie seal hunting for food).”

It takes hours of patient dedication, often in freezing conditions and difficult low light, to capture images like these, so it’s brilliant to see Russell’s efforts being recognized by the national press and we look forward to seeing more of his stunning photographs in this season’s club competitions.

Guest Speaker: Photography over 50

Gold medal winning Club member Russell Millner was our Zoom speaker for the evening on Wednesday 4th November when we were in for a real treat, with Russell taking us along on a fascinating journey from the frozen Arctic to the scorching wilderness plains.

The vistas and wildlife he saw on his travels were stunning and Russell was hugely knowledgeable about everything he’d captured in his superb images. The time flew by and I for one was enthralled from start to finish. Our thanks to Russell for an entertaining and informative presentation.

Next week our guest speaker is Trevor Davenport with his talk on ‘Nature far and near’, including Yellowstone and the Sefton coast. Guests are welcome for a small fee – please see our Membership page for details.
