KPC 24-25 Season is Underway.

Three weeks into the new season and we are delighted to have welcomed a number of new members and visitors to the club. We hope you have enjoyed the club the talks and images and it has encouraged you to develop your photography and take part in future activities at the club.

The season so far has included a ‘Share and Tell Members Evening’ in which projects, learning and images from the summer where shared by members. There was an eclectic mix of images including Wildlife Photography, images using vintage lenses, images produced using in camera features such as double exposure, Street Photography including some ICM (Intentional Camera Movement), and a photographic journey which included landscape images.

The last two Wednesday meetings have included a shared Zoom talk with Keswick Photographic Society by Jeanette Lendon entitled “Mobile Phone Photography” . Find Jeanette’s website at Jet Black Squares smartphone photography & videography Jeanette kindly provided notes from her talk, which are in the members section of the website.

Last week, award winning Wildlife Photographer Irene Amiet attended the club to give an in person talk “Photographic Wildlife Stories” . The talk was also available on Zoom for members to enjoy at home if they wished. https://www.ireneamiet.com/the-artist

Wednesday 2nd of October will see our first print competition of the year which will be judged by Carol and Gordon Watson of Lytham St Ann’s Photographic Society. Members are reminded to bring prints on the evening.

This is also a reminder that 2nd October is also the closing date for PDI images for the Open Competition on 16th October.

Intentional Camera Movement (ICM).

This week at Kendal Photography Club, Bill Pickard shared his journey into ICM photography. Bill has many years’ experience in ‘intentional camera shaking’ to create painterly, artistic images.

ICM is a tricky photographic technique to master. The images achieved are not the sharp, composed images of traditional photography but are creative, sometimes abstract surprising works of art. ICM photographic images convey movement, mood and arouse curiosity.

Bill’s body of work is extensive and inspirational. Members enjoyed Bill’s excellent talk, in which he shared flower and garden images, sports photography, landscapes, street photography and wildlife images, all taken using ICM techniques.

Bill discussed his reasons for taking ICM images and the techniques he uses. He provided advice to members who wish to try or improve their ICM photography including a handy advice sheet.

I know members of the club thoroughly enjoyed Bill’s talk and a number of members have been out in the last few days ‘shaking cameras’, I am sure in the hope of creating images as wonderful as Bill’s.

Huge thanks goes to Bill for sharing his images and his advice. Hopefully we will see an ICM competition in the club programme next year.

Next week (24th January) we have a PDI competition on the theme of ‘ Curves’. Members can attend at hall or via Zoom. Visitors are always welcome.

Finally a reminder that edited images for the Editing Evening on 31st January must be sent to Phil before Friday 26th January.

Annual Competitions 2022-2023 (PDI and Print).

Every year Kendal Photography Club holds its end of year competitions both in PDI and Print format. The competitions are an opportunity where members can show their best work from the season.

The PDI Annual competition was judged on 29th March 2023. Our judge for the evening was Lorraine Robins of St Austell Camera Club. Lorraine joined the club via Zoom to comment upon the images and select her winners for the evening.

In the Open Colour PDI the winner was Phil Drayton with his image of ‘Media City, Dubai’. This was the first time Phil has been awarded for an image in the Annual Club Competition and this was a worthy winner.

Moving on to the Open Mono PDI competition first place went to Russell Millner with his image ‘The Guardian and the White Horses’.

Next the Nature PDI and People and Portrait PDI categories, Russell Millner went on from success to success. His images ‘Keep Your Friends Close’ taking the award in the Nature section and ‘Champagne on your Birthday’ the award in People and Portrait. Well Done Russell an excellent set of images.

Annual Print Competition.

On Wednesday 12th April the Annual Print competitions were expertly judge by Richard Spiers of Morton Photographic Society, Carlisle. Richard gave an excellent critique of the images and his positive and considered comments were appreciated by members.

In the first section, Open Colour Print, Laurie Thurlow’s image ‘Dawn Light’ was the very deserving winner of first place.

In the Nature Print Section the quality of Peter Kennedy’s image ‘Night Heron Skimming‘ was recognised with the first place award.

The first place in People and Portrait Print went to Kim Rigg for her image ‘Shady Ste’.

Following the Interval it was time to judge the Monochrome Print section. Martin Rowe’s image of ‘Lindisfarne Fishing Hut’ was awarded first place.

The final section of the evening was the Cumbrian Print Panel Competition. This is a competition where members present three images which represent the life, communities and landscape of Cumbria.

The award went to Laurie Thurlow for his wonderful panel of images of ‘Scout Scar’ a limestone outcrop on the outskirts of Kendal. (Centre Image below)

Thanks goes Richard and Lorraine our judges for the time they have both given in reviewing our members image. Your comment and time are appreciated.

Thanks goes to Dave Nelson, PDI Secretary for his time in organising the PDI competitions this year and to Maureen Smith, Print Secretary for organising the Print Competitions. Also to Phil Drayton who organises the engraving of the trophies for our competitions.

Finally to all members who have participated this year. Enjoy your summer of photography and we look forward to see your new images next year.
