The Lancashire and Cheshire Photograph Union “Bob Robinson Trophy – Novice Cup”

On Sunday 13th October myself (Ann D), Karen and Cathy set off early morning to
Chorley with twenty print entries for the L & CPU Bob Robinson Trophy formerly the
Novice cup.

The day comprised of three sections The Novice Competition with stricter guidelines
this year. A table top sale of camera equipment, lenses, books etc and a print
competition for those not eligible for the novice cup.

I handed in our Novice cup print entries. I gave in three prints form our open
competition and we then had a chat with fellow photographers and perused the table
top sale. The Bring along a print competition was to be judged “in Camera” which is a
strange term for behind closed doors at a photography event. The Novice cup was to
be judged from 1.30pm so what do we do until then.

We asked where we could go locally and It was suggested Astley Hall, so off we went along with Janet one of Lytham’s new members We were told you are not allowed to take photo’s inside by another photographer but they had got a few background shots discreetly whilst they were there.

Astley Hall is a period house with a very reasonable entry fee (concessions rate x 4) and to our surprise you can take as many photo’s as long as you don’t use flash.

We returned to the L & CPU event in readiness for the novice cup. They had quite a few gremlins in the system and we eventually got underway on a rather manual approach.

I recorded our scores as they were judged, the lowest score the judges gave was 3 our highest was a 5 (or 2 5’s). At the end I added up our top 10 scores to 114. Having watched the scoring I was quite chuffed with this.

Then to top it off Kim had her image selected by one of the judges in the Bob Robinson and I had one of my images selected by the judges in the “bring a long a print” competition. The results were delayed due to the technical hitches so we set off home. Today we found out we came in joint 4th out of 16 clubs, a very successful day out.

Well done and thank you everyone who made the effort and entered the competition.

Kendal Photography Club Exhibition 2024

The weekend of 12th -14th April 2024 saw Kendal Photography Club’s exhibition at the Roundhouse, Staveley.  This was the first exhibition the club has staged in many years and it was a fantastic success.

Over 200 people visited the Roundhouse.    I think everyone found the venue interesting and an enjoyable display space.  It certainly met the needs of the club.

Saturday was the most popular day with over 100 visitors of all ages including children who also talked about their interest in photography.  There were locals, tourists visiting the area, family, friends, work colleagues, past club members, and members of local camera clubs visiting the show.  New contacts were made with local photographers some of whom were kind enough to promote the exhibition further via social media.

Everyone enjoyed the show and there were lots of glowing comments and positive feedback about the quality of the exhibition, the diverse images on display and the interesting venue.

A number of club members were successful in selling images and cards with contributions being made to club funds.

A number of visitors expressed an interest in joining the club and we look forward to welcoming new members for our 2024-25 season in September.  The new programme will be on the website over the summer alongside membership forms.  The club secretary can be contacted over the summer for further information if required.

Thanks goes to all those who attended the exhibition and asked questions, talked about photography with us and enjoyed the images.  We ran a small tally of visitors favourite images over the weekend, the most successful was a triptych of  ‘Scout Scar’ by Laurie.  Very close seconds were ‘Wet Sleddale Dam’ by Jeff and ‘Kestrel and Mouse’ by David P.   20 members exhibited images and every member had an image chosen by a visitor as their favourite image from the show.  I think this demonstrates what we already knew, that in photography there is something for everyone.

Thanks goes to Ann Dallaway the driving force behind the exhibition. To Stuart Hann www.theblindchocolatier.co.uk for the delicious chocolate, Janet and everyone at the Roundhouse www.staveleyroundhouse.com who visited the exhibition and to Facebook friends who gave us publicity.

Thanks also to all our members who contributed images, marketed and prepared for the exhibition and gave freely of their time to set up and staff the exhibition and take it down at the end.  I think the pride members have in displaying their work and the enjoyment of participating in the event has certainly encouraged the club to consider another exhibition in the future.

Annual Print Competition, 27th March 2024.

The club’s 23-24 season is drawing to a close and that means it’s time for the annual competitions.

Wednesday saw the Annual Print Competition, judged by club friends Sheila and Daryl Giles from Lytham St Annes Photographic Society, which is one of the biggest clubs in the North West.

Print nights are always well attended and for the Annual Competition members enjoyed images in Open Colour, Open Monochrome, Nature, People and Portraits and The Cumbria Panel Competition.

Shelia and Daryl had a previous sight of the images for consideration before the judging on the evening. As always it was an entertaining evening in which members could enjoy the images and listen to the judges’ comments on the images presented.

The Colour section was judged first by Daryl and the winning image on the night and the Trophy winner was ‘Enchanted Lake’ by Laurie Thurlow.

Also held in the final selection were ‘Piper’ and ‘Old Boat’ by Laurie Thurlow, ‘Steam at Garsdale’ and ‘Harbour Sunset’ by Ann Dallaway and ‘Redwoods ICM’ by Bill Pickard.

The Monochrome section was judged by Sheila.

Images held were ‘Red Stag’ by David Poole, ‘A Balanced Performance’ by Gavin Lowe, ‘Sheep Under a Tree’ by Russell Millner . The winner was ‘The Cob, Lyme Regis ICM’ meaning this year’s Monochrome Trophy goes to Bill Pickard.

After the coffee break Sheila and Daryl judged the Cumbrian Panel Competition together. For this competition members present three images that complement each other on a subject or theme. It is important that when viewed together the images are cohesive.

For the Cumbrian Panel Competition all the images must have been taken within Cumbria and are about the Cumbria Landscape, Wildlife or Cumbrian traditions and life.

In first place was ‘Weird Trees’ by Laurie Thurlow, with Jeff Bagnall’s image ‘Buttermere High” achieving 19 out of 20 points and Maureen Smith’s image ‘Cumbria Red Squirrels’ achieving 18.

Sheila next judged the Nature section. The Trophy went to ‘Little Egret Feeding’ by Gordon Mills which Sheila wished was an image she had taken herself.

Also in the final selection of leading images was ‘Squabbling Chaffinches’ by Gordon Mills, ‘Sparrowhawk on Pidgeon’ and ‘Aggressive Buzzard’ both by David Poole and ‘Purple Heron’ by Peter Kennedy.

Daryl judged the final and smallest section of the evening which was People and Portraits.

Three images were held back with ‘Playing the Blues’ achieving the win and trophy for Maureen Smith. ‘Waiting’ by Jeff Bagnall and ‘The Engineer’ by Maureen Smith were also considered in the final selection.

The club would like to thank Sheila and Daryl for their considered comments and advice about the members’ images. We look forward to seeing them again in the future.

The Full Score Sheets are in the member’s section of the website.

Next week is the the Annual PDI Competition, which is available on Zoom and at Castle Street. Visitors, as always, are welcome to come along and meet members, so please join us especially if you are considering joining the club when the next 24-25 season starts in September 2024.

Members Print Competition Three and Final Prints Results of 23/24.

The final prints competition of the 23/24 season was held on February 14th. The competition was judged by Carol and Gordon Watson of Lytham St Ann’s Photography Club. Carol and Gordon have many years experience of entering club, federation, national and international competitions and the club appreciates them driving up the M6 on a wet, foggy night to offer advice to members on their images.

Carol judged the colour images first. Nine images where held back into her final selection for the top scores.

David Poole was leading the season’s league table going into the final competition having only dropped one point in the first two print competitions. David finished the season with another win for his image ‘Aggressive Buzzard’. David completed the season with 118/120 points, a truly impressive score. Well done David for winning the 23-24 Colour Prints Trophy.

Congratulations also go to Kim Rigg who scored 20 points for her image ‘Pretty in Pink’. Kim took joint second place in this season’s Print Competition along with Bill Pickard and Laurie Thurlow all achieving a total of 108/120. Well done to all three members.

After the coffee break Gordon judged the monochrome images. Gordon offered advice on images and held back eight into his final selection. At this point Gordon needed to give careful consideration to the detail of images as he worked towards his final winning image.

Gordon awarded first place to Kim Rigg for her image ‘Georgia’. Kim achieved maximum points on the night having also achieved 20 points for her image ‘Out of Luck’. In addition, David Poole scored 20 points for his image ‘Christian Iddoni’.

When the final scores were totalled the overall winner for the Monochrome Print Competition for the 23/24 season was Kim Rigg with 112/120. Second place went to David Poole and third place to Jeff Bagnall.

Intentional Camera Movement (ICM).

This week at Kendal Photography Club, Bill Pickard shared his journey into ICM photography. Bill has many years’ experience in ‘intentional camera shaking’ to create painterly, artistic images.

ICM is a tricky photographic technique to master. The images achieved are not the sharp, composed images of traditional photography but are creative, sometimes abstract surprising works of art. ICM photographic images convey movement, mood and arouse curiosity.

Bill’s body of work is extensive and inspirational. Members enjoyed Bill’s excellent talk, in which he shared flower and garden images, sports photography, landscapes, street photography and wildlife images, all taken using ICM techniques.

Bill discussed his reasons for taking ICM images and the techniques he uses. He provided advice to members who wish to try or improve their ICM photography including a handy advice sheet.

I know members of the club thoroughly enjoyed Bill’s talk and a number of members have been out in the last few days ‘shaking cameras’, I am sure in the hope of creating images as wonderful as Bill’s.

Huge thanks goes to Bill for sharing his images and his advice. Hopefully we will see an ICM competition in the club programme next year.

Next week (24th January) we have a PDI competition on the theme of ‘ Curves’. Members can attend at hall or via Zoom. Visitors are always welcome.

Finally a reminder that edited images for the Editing Evening on 31st January must be sent to Phil before Friday 26th January.

KPC Members Share and Tell Evening

Kendal Photography Club returned to club meetings for the second part of the 23-24 season on Wednesday 10th January 2024. The evening was the second Share and Tell Evening of the 23-24 season. Members enjoyed varied presentations by Jeff, Suzy, Dave and Russell.

Jeff shared a selection of drone images taken locally and on Anglesey.  It was interesting to see the different perspective drone photography gives of familiar landscapes. Jeff shared some of the challenges of drone photography and the benefits of different compositions using a drone, which can satisfy a photographer’s curiosity about places.

The evening continued with Russell sharing his impending application for his second Royal Photographic Society Distinction, (Fellowship). Russell is submitting in the Nature Category and he shared his statement of intent, for a panel of images about the life and demise of Polar Bears. Members had opportunity to enjoy 21 images of polar bears from cub to old age. Members offered views and constructive advice, which hopefully Russell found useful. Good Luck with your submission Russell.

After the coffee break, Suzy shared her ‘Grasses’ project from a very wet stay in Borrowdale, Cumbria. Suzy has produced two books of wonderful monochrome images of grasses using a variety of techniques. Book one is of darker, low key type images and Book two of lighter, high key images. Suzy shared how she had developed the project as a member of a support group. Club members enjoyed seeing the variety of images. I am sure her work will have inspired other members to consider a book format for an image project.

Finally Dave shared a collection of images from three visits to Loch Ossian Youth Hostel and surrounding area. This area is only accessible by bike, foot or rail via Corrour railway station (Glasgow to Fort William line). Corrour is the highest mainline railway station in the UK. Dave visited the area over three years and presented a interesting collection of mono and colour images which showed the area with and without snow.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and varied evening of photography. It is always interesting to see the projects members undertake and I am sure it has inspired other members to undertake and share project photography. Thank you to Jeff, Russell, Suzy and Dave.

There will be further opportunities to share your work next season (24-25) so I would encourage members to please consider sharing their photography interests with members.

Next week we have a talk by Bill Pickard, a Kendal Club Member. Bill is sharing his talk on Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) .

The club will be meeting at the hall and via Zoom. New members and visitors are always welcome and joining information is available in the members section.
